A little over 20 years ago, the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) was created when a group of industry leaders became concerned with the service and installation coming from contractors. There were concerns that not every individual had the proper knowledge and experience, so they wanted to create a way to educate contractors to reduce the amount of call backs and added costs. In 1997 NATE received organizational funding by manufacturers and was represented by contracting, distribution, manufacturing and utility communities and trade associations. A board of trustees consulted on test development, and created the first NATE test which was administered nationally.
The NATE test was created to test the real-world knowledge of the HVACR systems. The test is taken by contractors, educators and manufacturers nationwide. The multiple choice test focuses on topics such as air conditioning, gas/oil heating, air distribution and more. There are four steps to this test which will end in a Senior Level Efficiency. The first step is earning your NATE certificate which can be achieved by taking the entry-level exam focused on the skills needed to be in the HVACR workforce. Once that test is passed, the next test can be taken after working in the field for 6-12 months. This test will cover topics more related to the professional level. After two years of experience in the field you are eligible to earn installation or service certification. The highest level of NATE certification is the senior level, which can be achieved by holding two NATE service certifications in heating and cooling.
