Specific types of lighting can make a huge difference in your home. Lighting isn’t just a part of decorating a room, but instead, it can affect the entire atmosphere of your home. However, purchasing different light bulbs can become extremely overwhelming due to the vast variety of options to choose from. Check out these four basic types of bulbs to help you select the right lighting for each room in your home.

Incandescent

Incandescent light bulbs produce a warm, glowing light. They are powered by the electric current passing through the filament, heating it to a certain temperature that will produce light. Incandescent bulbs are the traditional bulbs most people have used for decades now, however, they are beginning to phase out due to the newer energy-efficient options. Many incandescent bulbs are used in living rooms, dens, and bedrooms due to the more yellow and cozy feeling they produce.

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)

CFLs produce a cooler and bluer tone compared to incandescent bulbs, however they tend to last longer and use 75 percent less energy. CFLs are not generally well-suited for control devices, including anything from dimmers to motion detectors. They may function in control devices, however, it can drastically reduce the lifespan of the bulb. Furthermore, CFLs can produce a lot of light, but they can also be difficult to replace. They are most commonly seen in difficult to reach fixtures that are expected to produce light for more than three hours per day.

LED Bulbs

LED bulbs can last up to three times longer than CFLs and they are just as energy efficient. They used to be solely used for task lighting due to their harsh, bright light, but they have progressed immensely within the last few years. LED bulbs now have the ability to produce the same warm, yellow glow that is seen in incandescent lights. They are best utilized in the most high-traffic areas of your home such as the kitchen, living room table and floor lamps, bathroom vanity lights, and exterior lights that are often left on throughout the night.

Halogen

Halogen bulbs use 10-20 percent less energy compared to incandescent bulbs. They tend to give off a bright, white light that is similar to natural daylight. Halogen bulbs are well suited for detailed work areas due to their high light output. They are seen frequently in kitchens and home offices.
