Dealing with a clogged drain can be a huge pain, and clogs often occur at the worst of times. Not only are they inconvenient, but they are bad for your plumbing system. You don’t have to spend a wad of cash to prevent drain clogs. In fact, you don’t have to spend money at all, and practicing prevention will help keep your plumbing system working efficiently for as long as possible.

Use a Drain Grate/Screen

A drain grate or screen will block non-liquid items, such as food, hair, or dirt, from getting into the drain and causing it to clog. However, most grates will not prevent harmful liquids like oil and grease from passing through. If you need to get rid of liquids such as these, pour them into a sealable container and dispose of them in the garbage. If you are using a grate, be sure to clean it as needed. If you neglect to clean the grate, it can become a hygiene hazard.

Don’t Flush Food

No food, nor food bi-product like oil, fat, bones, meat, grains, eggshells, or coffee grounds should be flushed down your kitchen skin’s drain. If you have a disposal, it can be used to flush most foods, but you should only use it about once a day. However, you should never flush oil, grease, or coffee grounds down the disposal because they can coat the inside of your pipes and cause a clog. You should scrape your plates into the trash and dispose of leftover food in the garbage can as well.

Brush Hair Before Bathing

Brushing your hair naturally removes loose hair, which prevents it from coming off in the shower or bath and later clogging your drain. Most of the hair that would come off in the shower will instead come off on the brush, where it can be easily removed rather than creating a clog.

Run Cold Water with Disposal

When using your disposal, always keep a stream of cold water running. The current of water moves contents through the disposal and the pipes. Using the disposal without running water could potentially damage the system, and hot water is not as efficient in moving materials through the disposal and down the pipes. Hot water tends to make food particles thicken and solidify, which can cause it to get stuck down in the disposal. Let cold water run for a few seconds before using the disposal.
