While many homes utilize sewer systems, those in more rural areas may operate on a septic system. Septic tanks do take a bit of maintenance to keep them working efficiently, but that does not mean it must be complicated. Here are a few things you can do to make sure your septic system continues working properly:

Inspections

Having your septic system inspected regularly as well as regular maintenance will help keep the system healthy. There may be minor issues that you have yet to notice; regular inspections will find those issues and resolve them before they become a bigger problem. Your septic tank should also be pumped out regularly. This will depend on the size of your household, the amount of wastewater, and the size of the septic tank. Most septic tanks will need to be pumped out every 3 to 5 years.

Be Mindful of the Drain

Minimize the use of your garbage disposal to prevent solids from getting built up in the septic tank, causing the drain field to get clogged. Never pour grease down the drain; it can clog the drain field over time. Nothing besides human waste and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. Keep in mind that septic tanks hold bacteria necessary for breaking down the solids in the tank, so it is important not to pour chemicals down the drain as they may kill this bacteria. Consider using more environmentally-friendly cleaners.

Use Water Efficiently

Failed septic systems can often blame too much water usage for their failure. Make sure to check your faucets and toilets for leaks and make repairs as needed to help reduce the amount of water flowing into the septic tank. If you are a hot tub owner, do not drain the hot tub into the septic tank or drain field. Large volumes of water can drown the drain field and the chlorine may kill the bacteria needed to break down solids in the tank.

Landscaping

The best coverage for your drain field is grass, which will reduce erosion. Plants with longer roots, especially trees, can cause structural damage to your septic tank. Make sure that your sprinklers and irrigation systems run away from the drain field, as extra water can cause problems in your drain field. Never drive over the drain field or park over it. Keep any storage sheds or patios away from the area, as they can prevent the soil from being packed down, possibly resulting in broken pipes.
