Choosing a new air conditioning system may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is important to get it right. Depending on your type of home, the climate you live in, and your home’s layout, you may want to invest in either ducted or ductless air conditioning. Both will cool your home, but they are installed and operated in different ways.

Ducted Air Conditioning

Ducted air conditioning systems consist of air ducts made of sheet metal inside the walls and ceilings of your home. Warmed or cooled air travels from the central air conditioning unit or furnace through the ducts, delivering air to each room through vents. If you already have ductwork installed, most will recommend a ducted system because installation consists of simply hooking up the new unit to the existing ventilation.

When should you choose ducted air conditioning? If humidity is a concern, ducted air conditioning systems are better at controlling humidity. They also provide better air circulation. You may choose a ducted air conditioning system due to aesthetic concerns as everything is hidden behind walls. They are easier and less expensive to service since there are fewer components.

Ductless Air Conditioning

Ductless air conditioning systems send refrigerant directly to small air handlers that are installed throughout your home. The air handlers also remove heat from each room individually. They look like small boxes on the wall or ceiling of each room.

When should you choose ductless air conditioning? You may not have enough room for ducts in the walls or ceilings, especially if you have high ceilings. Ductless air conditioning is also beneficial if you are adding a room to an existing space because it can be costly to add ducts to the new space and connect to your existing system. If you want to be able to control temperatures room by room, ductless air conditioning systems have separate air handlers in each room that can be independently controlled. They also decrease dust since forced air is not traveling through the space via ducts.
