Spring is here andsSummer is right around the corner. In order to remain cool over these warmer months of the year, one should consider installing a new air conditioning unit. Advancements in cooling technology design and engineering deliver both comfort and energy efficiency. Here are a few tips to choose the correct A/C unit for your home.

Choosing the Proper Sized A/C

Your A/C Is Too Big

If you buy a central A/C that is sized too big for you home, then it will run more like an A/C unit from the 80s. Your unit will turn on quickly, cool your home rapidly, then shut off. Your house will be cool, but it is not going through a full cooling cycle and your home will soon be hot again, turning on your A/C once again. This will defeat the purpose of an energy efficient unit and will cost you hundreds in the long run.

Your A/C Is Too Small

If your central A/C is too small then it will constantly be running and spend most of the day trying to catch up to where it should be in the cooling cycle. The A/C unit will be putting in work overtime, costing you more money.

Your A/C Is The Proper Size

When your A/C is the correct size, your home will cool efficiently, using a full cooling cycle. Effectively using your energy and saving you money as opposed to over spending.

Selecting The Size Of Your Central A/C Unit

We are going to get into some calculations in order to figure out which A/C unit size is right for your home. Not all homes are built the same, and climates around the United States vary. Depending on where you live, the calculation to figure which central A/C is right for your home is different.

The calculation to figure out the correct A/C unit size for your home is the following:

(House Square Footage) x 30, divided by 12,000 - 1

Here’s an example:

  1. 2,000 x 30 = 60,000
  2. 60,000 / 12,000 = 5
  3. 5 - 1 = 4

So you would need a 4-ton sized central air conditioning unit.

Above is the calculation for an average American home, however for hot, arid climates like the Southwest. Instead of subtracting 1.0, you subtract ZERO to get appropriate AC size for hot and arid climates. The equation would be the following:

(House Square Footage) x 30, divided by 12,000 - 0

  1. 2000 x 30 = 60,000
  2. 60,000 / 12,000 = 5
  3. 5 - 0 = 5
